Under patriarchy women are oppressed both by the patriarch and the matriarch. Matriarch oppresses women particularly over the daughters and the patriarch, oppresses women particularly over the daughters-in-law. A woman, who act with oppressive power politics and represses her daughter or daughter-in-law, is resented and feared as a matriarch. She unknowingly works as an agent of patriarchal norms in a male dominated society.
