EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO BE TECHNOLOGICALLY LITERATE THROUGH DIGITAL LITERACY By Jeba Evangeline

Abstract

As technology continues to advance in society, there will be plenty of new social media sites and other tools students will use in and out of the classroom. Digital Literacy is the awareness, attitude and ability of individuals to appropriately use digital tools and facilities to identify, access, manage, integrate, evaluate, analyse and synthesize digital resources, construct new knowledge, create media expressions, and communicate with others, in the context of specific life situations, in order to enable constructive social action; and to reflect upon this process. As educators it is crucial to share with students how to be safe with what they say on the Internet, and what they select as sources. Digital Literacy is a crucial skill that we as educators must foster and encourage in our classrooms. Therefore encourage administrators to provide robust professional development and learning time for their staff and faculty. Teachers can integrate digital literacy into everyday learning, provided to share the resources and support they need to shift a traditional curriculum to a more innovative one. Our students will be better digital citizens and curators of online content; a necessary skill for success in the 21st century and a valuable contribution to the society.
