THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS FACEBOOK USAGE AND THEIR PSYCHOSOCIAL ADJUSTMENT OF HARAMAYA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, ETHIOPIA By Galata Sitota, Amare Misganaw, Ambachew Tarekegn

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between students Facebook usage and their psychosocial adjustment of Haramaya university regular students. Three hundred Fifty one students were selected randomly. Data were collected through open and close ended questionnaire.  Data were analyzed using a   mixture   of descriptive and inferential    statistical methods that were successively conducted to examining the status of psychosocial adjustment (one-sample t- test, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, independent sample t-test). Findings indicated that Facebook user students included in our present research have a considerable level /almost addicted to Facebook use and they have also a reasonable level of perceived psychosocial adjustment. 31.79% of the Haramaya university students uses Facebook for the purpose of cognition: seeking or acquiring information followed by 23.5% for the sake of social utility: facilitating relationships with family, friends, or desired social groups. 18.89% of them use for the purpose of diversion:  having pleasure, relaxation, and escape from boredom or worries and mood management and 10% of them for the purpose withdrawal: to establish barriers between the self and others, to ensure uninterrupted attention, or simply to obtain solitude.. Besides the aforementioned purpose of using Facebook, 15.67% of respondents reported that they have been using for their own purpose.  There is no a statistically significant psychosocial adjustment difference between Facebook users and non-users and between both sexes.  A statistically significant sex difference in Facebook use was not observed. Though there is no statistically significant sex differences in psychosocial adjustment, male students are little better in adjusting themselves than their female students counter parts.
