Abstract
The learner of the present modern era gets information and knowledge very easily and cheaply, especially with the advent and advancement in Internet and cell phone technology. Technology is now proving to be double-edged sword, as on one hand it is a boon, especially, for the first generation learners, by providing easy access and information and on the other hand, it is playing havoc with the life of the youth and students, as unfortunately technologies are now being used mostly in a negative way. Large number of our children and students are becoming the victims and target of bullying and are being abused online. This abusive aspect through the use of technology use is known as cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is mainly intentional use of Information and Communication Technologies so as to support intentional, repeated and hostile behaviour directed at an individual or a group, so as to psychologically, emotionally and deliberately hurt that person or individual. Cyber bullying can be derogatory and defamatory to a group, a team, a race or target a single victim. Bullies employ all sorts of cyber communications available at their disposal, including posts to social networking sites, chat rooms, email, instant messaging and blogs, through skype network so as to harass, threaten, spread lies or distribute embarrassing pictures. The victims experience lower self-esteem and a variety of emotional disturbances, retaliating, being scared, frustrated, angry and depressed. A large number of social networking websites like MySpace, Face Book and Twitter provide a platform to post online humiliation. It has revealed that India ranks third in cyber bullying kind of instances, with 53 percent of respondents, saying that they have been bullied online in some form or the other. But, due to the certain legislative efforts and framing of certain stringent cyber laws and Information technology laws, to some extent, cyber and online bullying is being prevented. The present paper attempts to analyze and find out the reasons and effects that cyber bullying has on the lives of students and kids. The paper also discusses and highlights the means to prevent and completely erase such a kind of menace, which has ruined the career and lives of our youth and children.
