Abstract
The North Eastern region of India is constantly in news for the innumerable insurgencies which occur in those areas and the failing attempts of the authorities to tackle them. The conflict between various militant groups and the central and state governments has been continuing ever since independence and partition. Literature of these areas reflects the traumatic impacts of these mutinies on the lives of people. This study intends to explore the literary representation of the causes and consequences of these militant actions. The North-Eastern states of India have a very affluent literary tradition and this study focuses on four carefully chosen novels written in English. The selected novels are Mitra Phukan’s The Collector’s Wife, Anjum Hasan’s Lunatic in My Head, Daisy Hasan’s The To-Let House, and Aruni Kashyap’s The House with a Thousand Stories. Mitra Phukan and Aruni Kashyap are Assamese writers and Anjum Hasan and Daisy Hasan are from Shillong, Mekhalaya.
