Abstract:
Murtaza Mutahari holds the view that Islam maintains equality between men and
women. But equality is given not by acknowledging similar and identical rights and duties to
both sexes, rather by giving them the same on the basis of their respective natural differences.
According to him, men and women are created to live together and different functions are given
to them, hence there are differences in their nature. Justice dictates that they should not be given
the same functions and duties because of their natural differences, if so it is injustice. In his view,
this dual treatment is not because of discrimination, but of differentiation on the basis of
differences in creation.
