Ethics and Integrity in Education By Neelam Sharma and Prof. Meena Kumari

Abstract

In the contemporary era, the sphere of education plays a crucial and indispensable role in fostering enlightenment and cultivating proper conduct within society. An educated individual is an asset to any country, aiding in the determination of social and economic dimensions. Education acts as a catalytic force, enabling individuals to evolve from basic instinctual behaviors into well-mannered civil members of society. Spanning from pre-birth to death, education imparts cultural values and contributes to societal welfare. It facilitates a good life and endows individuals with the qualities necessary to be socially, economically active, and ethically mature. As a significant, complex, and central aspect of the educational enterprise, any interpretation must be deeply rooted in principles such as ethics and integrity. Ethics, pertaining to moral principles that regulate human behavior, plays a crucial role in character formation and establishing a healthy learning environment. Additionally, the issue of honesty and consistency in action—integrity—is vital, as its absence would impede the optimal functioning of educational systems. Incorporating ethical values and integrity in educational practices presents challenges due to the multiple cultural dimensions that education carries globally. Therefore, a comprehensive examination is necessary to impart moral and ethical standards in educational environments. This paper interrogates the substantial role of ethical virtues in education and their profound impact on students, educators, institutions, and society at large. It offers recommendations for enhancing ethics in the educational arena and highlights the need for continuous attention given the dynamic reality of increasingly complex and interconnected global settings.
