UNDETERRED THOUGH SCARRED: THE PHOENIX-LIKE RISE OF THE VICTIMS OF PARTITION IN LALITHAMBIKA ANTHARJANAM’S ‘KODUMKAATIL PETTA ORU ILA’  By Niranjana Nair P.

Abstract

The larger political and economic impact of Partition had always been the central concern of Partition scholarship. The focus of attention has now gradually shifted to the individual experiences of survivors. However, even as far back as the bifurcation of India, these individual experiences of survivors have been a matter of interest to creative writers. Even regional writers have been influenced by the event. The Malayalam writer Lalithambika Antharjanam’s short story ‘‘Kodumkaatil  Petta Oru Ila” narrates the travails of women who have undergone unimaginable suffering in the communal conflicts that accompanied Partition. The present paper is an attempt to study how Antharjanam’s characters respond spiritedly to the harrowing times they have been through.
